Merchant Navy Memorials is a website which is dedicated to two Merchant Navy War Memorials.


Merchant Navy War Memorial, Arromanches, Normandy, France.
This Merchant Navy War Memorial, funded by the Normandy Merchant Navy Memorial Trust was unveiled on the 6th June 2003. In Remembrance of the Merchant Navy sailors who were killed in the D-Day Landings in Normandy during 'Operation Neptune' which started on 6th June 1944 and lasted for a further 3 months.

This section will give information and also will help visitors to find the site if they wish to lay a floral tribute.

Merchant Navy War Memorial, Dover, Kent, England.
This new Merchant Navy War Memorial was unveiled in Dover on the 3rd September 2008 by Mr Winston Churchill, the Grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, the Second World War (1939 to 1945) Prime Minister.

Funded by the Dover & District Merchant Navy Memorial Fund it consists of a statue of a World War Two Merchant Navy sailor, 2 metres 80 cm. in height and mounted on Cornish granite on a site which faces the entrance to the harbour in Marine Parade Gardens, Marine Parade, Dover.

Donations to the Dover & District Merchant Navy Fund are still required for the upkeep, security and preservation of this Memorial in Remembrance of those sailors who lost their lives at sea in the Second World War.

The sea is their grave, no headstone to mark their passing.

Service of Commemoration for the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings on 6th June 2009.

Issued 6th April 09. (Details as of this date)

Saturday 6th June 2009 at Arromanches.

'Merchant Navy veterans' together with veterans of the L.S.T. & Landing Craft Association to assemble outside the Hotel De La Marine (on the sea front) Arromanches at 15:30 hrs on Saturday the 6th June 2009, for briefing on arrangements for wreath laying ceremony at our two Memorial Plaques to take place during the Final Parade which starts at 1800 hrs.

Merchant Navy Standard Bearers and wreath layers please notify the Merchant Navy organiser by emailing this website with full details as soon as possible.

The Hotel De La Marine's entrance is quite near to the Place du 6 Juin 1944 where the Final Parade of Commemoration and the French Medal Presentation will take place at these times.

1600 hrs Presentation of veteran medals by the French.

1800 hrs Final Parade (and wreath laying).


Friday 5th June 2009 at the Caen, Peace Memorial - to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

1600 hrs 3rd Division (British Army) Parade and Service/wreath laying ceremony in the British Garden of Remembrance at approx. 1630 hrs.

1900 hrs. Beating Retreat
